How to Set Your Goals and How to Achieve Clarity

The new year is approaching and you’re pumped! You are ready for a new beginning and you’ve got some changes you want to make. You’ve got goals! But how will you achieve them? What’s your plan? For starters, you need to get it all down on paper. It is a proven fact that when people write things down, they are more likely to work toward execution. So let’s talk about how to set your goals and how to achieve some clarity for the new year.

HOW TO SET YOUR GOALS

Setting goals can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. We want to do so much but we think to ourselves, we only have a year. And you are right, we have a year. So you don’t want to add any unrealistic goals to your plan. What has worked for me in the more recent years, is getting these goals on paper. It helps to have a visual of what you want to accomplish and can evaluate how realistic these goals are.

START WITH CATEGORIES

On my handy goal planning sheet, the first thing I do is group my goals into categories. Having categories allows you to get a clear picture of what areas you want to work on in your life.  I typically use the following categories:

  • Home
  • Work
  • Personal
  • Health
  • Blog
  • Family
  • Financial

Other helpful categories can be:

  • Faith
  • Educational
  • Business
  • Fitness

KEEP YOUR GOALS SPECIFIC & CONCISE

This step is super important. Keeping your goals specific and concise is what’s going to help with being successful. For example, let’s say you are thinking about your “fitness” category and you want to lose 30 pounds this year. You don’t want your goal to be “Lose 30 pounds”. You HAVE to be specific. And you need to keep your goals for each category to a minimum. Don’t choose too many, this is where it will become unrealistic. Here’s an example of what your goals should look like for this scenario.

REVIEW & REVISE

Now that you’ve written your goals down and have a better idea of what you’d like to achieve, review them and revise. A great reference to reviewing your goals is to make sure they follow the ever so popular and effective “SMART” system.

Specific: As I mentioned above, keep them as specific as possible. It’s much harder to be successful when your goal is too broad.

Measurable: There has to be a way to measure your success. In the example above, I listed how many days I would work out, meal prep and eat clean. That’s measurable.

Achievable: They have to be realistic! Don’t say you are going to workout 6 days a week when you know your schedule or financial constraints will not allow it.

Relevant: Make sure this goal really matters to you. Don’t make it a part of your plan if it really won’t bring joy to your life.

Timed: Give yourself a schedule, not just a deadline.  You must have an action plan. Without a plan/schedule, your deadlines mean nothing.

All of these are key to creating your goals. This will bring clarity to your mission, leading to a more cohesive plan and rocking your goals.

CHOOSE ONE LITTLE WORD

my one little word

Now here’s the fun part. I started doing this last year and it really helped.  After you’ve looked at all your goals, think of what “one little word” encompasses exactly what you need to get to the finish line of these goals. For example, “strength” or “passion”. Read more about how this one little word can help you in achieving your goals daily here.

CREATE A PLAN!

Now that you have achieved clarity on what you want to accomplish, you need to take ACTION! Here is where the action plan comes into place. Having a plan of attack is what’s going to get you where you need to be. I talk a lot more about how to create an action plan here.

I hope these tips and my free 2018 Goal Setting printable give you the jump start you need this season. Happy planning!
