How to Choose Your “One Little Word”

Back in January, I sat down to create my yearly vision board with my bestie Vanessa. This year I opted to create mine in my planner since I knew I would look at it if not every day, at least weekly. I wanted it to be in a place where I would have a constant reminder of where I wanted my life to be by the end of 2017. I had also seen a lot of my fellow planner babes talking about their “one little word” for the year. I looked into it some more and learned it was a tradition Ali Edwards started for herself and it has now grown into something even bigger!

The idea, in a nutshell, is you choose “one little word” and that word becomes your daily focus. Everything you do should reflect this word, daily.  I took a look at my vision board and decided the only way I was going to reach these goals was to “apply” myself. And that was it, APPLY, was my one little word.

A single word can be a powerful thing. It can be the ripple in the pond that changes everything. It can be sharp and biting or rich and soft and slow. – Ali Edwards

It’s now the beginning of July and we are officially past the half-way mark for the year! Woohoo! We’ve made it! I felt it was time to check in with myself and see how much progress I’ve made with “APPLYING” myself in order to reach my goals. And this is where I’m at with everything.

Watch how I created my planner vision board here.

As you can see, I haven’t accomplished EVERYTHING but it’s a work in progress, and that is OK! Juggling work-life, mom-life, wife-life and everything in between can make reaching your goals a little difficult. But, we have to create a focus for ourselves so we don’t lose site of what is really important to us. Yes, being a mom and wife is important, but so are our personal passions and dreams! We can’t give up on those. Working with this one little word is a nice reminder for me when I don’t want to get up early, and when I don’t want to put in extra hours for my blog.

Working with this one little word is a nice daily reminder for me. When I am feeling discouraged or lazy, this little voice inside says, “Are you applying yourself, right now?” That gives me an extra push and I like it!

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR ONE LITTLE WORD

Choosing your one word shouldn’t be difficult at all. However, you do want to take some time to think it through.  You want to choose a word that will be a good fit so you can have results. I put together a quick list of what I did to choose my one little word.

  • REFLECT. Take some time to reflect on your goals for the year. What are you truly trying to accomplish in your life; whether it be personally, for your career or your family? Do you see a connection or a pattern with any of your goals?
  • MAKE A LIST. Have I ever said how much love lists! Ha! But seriously, make a list of words that you may come to mind as you reflect on your goals. Do any of those words encompass what your vision is?
  • EVALUATE. Once you’ve narrowed down a couple words, grab a cup of tea or coffee and sit with it. Evaluate how the word speaks to you. Do you feel this word will give you that extra push when you need it? Does it make you feel good when you say it or think about it? Again, you want to choose a word that will take you one step further each day to reaching your full potential.

Now, as much as I love this idea. Remember, we are not perfect. We can’t always be “on” and were going to have days where we just can not! And that is OK, this one little word will be there to remind us that we can get back on track whenever we are ready.  It’s not too late to start your “one little word” journey.

So, what will your one little word be?

Share in the comments, I’d love to know!
